The Importance of Community-Campus Engagement

On February 24, 2016, I attended Carleton University’s 4th annual community engagement event to find out from participants why community-campus engagement is so important to students, communities, and post-secondary institutions. ACORN – Supporting Farmers in Atlantic Canada

The Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network (ACORN) has been supporting seed saving farmers since 2013 as part of The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security. They provide farmers with opportunities to participate in training, networking, on-farm research, and conservation activities.

Black Duck Wild Rice: The Resurgence of Indigenous Food Sovereignty within the Kawartha Lakes Region

Black Duck Wild Rice, located in Curve Lake First Nation is a social enterprise involved with seeding, harvesting, processing and educating about manoomin or wild rice—a traditional food of the Nishnaabe people.

Drift: Art and Dark Matter – Audio Description Tour

For the Drift: Art as Dark Matter exhibit, the Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) developed an audio description tour designed for gallery visitors who are blind or who have low vision. It was intended for in-gallery use, but was also able to be used remotely.

 

The tour provided an overall description of the exhibition, a description of the installation n-land: the holographic (principle) by Jol Thoms, and a description of Blank Spots by Nadia Lichtig. The descriptions were accompanied by interpretations and further prompts for connecting with the themes of the exhibition.

 

This tour was produced by CUAG, in collaboration with Carla Ayukawa and eight members of the Ottawa blind and low vision community. It features the voice work of Ian McMullen, Fiona Wright, Frederick Imad and Anne-Marie Iemmolo. It was developed as a Creative Access Working Groups project, funded by a Canada Council for the Arts Sector Innovation grant, in partnership with Critical Distance Centre for Curators and Tangled Art + Disability. It was also supported by the Mame Jackson Experiential Learning Fund.

 

These recordings were captured during the 2021 COVID lockdown using the voice artists’ home setup while connecting and recording via an online platform.

Rolling with the punches during COVID

Rolling with the punches during COVID was developed through a “digital cue” research process. The research participants were asked to take pictures of items that represented the impacts of COVID-19 on their lives as persons with intellectual disabilities. The researcher then used these images as “digital cues” to better understand participants’ lived experiences during COVID.

 

Once the research was collected and analyzed, anonymized interview content was “scripted” into a short video capturing the various themes raised by the research participants. Images taken by the research participants were also layered into the video in creative ways to fully capture the participants’ experiences.
