Based on my master’s thesis research, I built an interactive training module to help teach medical students how to better communicate with geriatric patients. Initially created on DVD, I have updated the module as a PowerPoint Presentation. Please feel free to download and use it by clicking on “Download PPT” above!

 

Note that the training module contains embedded youtube videos so you will need to enable media content when you open the presentation, and you will need a high speed internet connection. This presentation can only be opened in Microsoft PowerPoint. It cannot be opened in open office or on a mobile phone.

Please feel free to use this module for teaching purposes (let me know by emailing me at admin@nicolebedford.ca so I can keep track!). So far it has been used at Queen’s University, University of Western Ontario, and by a Pastoral Care group in Ottawa.

Lives Suspended is a short documentary about Saskia, a quiet woman with cerebral palsy who has been living in a nursing home while she waits for a spot at a group home. When the nursing home moves her to a new building, the transition leads to negative consequences for Saskia.

Patrick’s Place follows Patrick, a friendly, adventurous 28 year old diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, as he moves into his own apartment in his parent’s basement. Patrick’s parents hope that this transition will help him become more independent and will calm his anxiety about moving entirely to his own place in the future. As we get to know Patrick, we learn how his family and formal supports work together to support him to have a full life with increasing independence.

A Home of My Own is a short documentary about Ken, a person with a very giving heart who enjoys volunteering his time to others. In this documentary, we learn how Ken’s parents have supported him throughout his life and how diligently they worked to find a place for him to call his own!

Making Dreams a Reality is a short documentary about Kelsey, a good-natured young woman with Down syndrome. Throughout the year, we followed Kelsey as she explored adult life and worked to realize her dreams.

This video was created for the Caring and Sharing Exchange of Ottawa-Carleton (caringandsharing.ca). The Caring and Sharing Exchange is a charity that serves underpriviledged children and families by providing meals and school supplies at key times during the year.

Voices in Harmony, an Ottawa Choir, was looking to add videos of their spring concert to their website. So we helped them out by shooting and editing the performance into 11 videos! This video is a sample of what we created for them.

This educational video helps viewers learn how to craft a more powerful message using plain language writing. Developed based on Christine Ackerley’s Plain Language conference presentation, the video was created as a knowledge mobilization product for Carleton Scholar.

On February 24, 2016, I attended Carleton University’s 4th annual community engagement event to find out from participants why community-campus engagement is so important to students, communities, and post-secondary institutions. This video was completed as part of the Community First: Impacts of Community Engagement (CFICE) project.

For this touching piece, I helped Oludayo and her husband Olusola put together this loving message for their two beautiful girls, Imole and Imisi. They sent me the photos, videos, and the audio recorded script, and I edited the final video. The result is this beautiful message that their children will have for years to come.
